Mr. K said we were awesome in PE. We played scooter hockey.
We cleaned out our desks and used our new bamboo chamois cloths. In Math we had clinics in Order of Operations and division. In the library computer lab, we did Imagine Learning and read each other's blogs and made comments. Tomorrow, we have a new student coming. She came to meet Ms. Belle and got a tour of the school. We are excited to greet her. Welcome! We had a great work session finishing our posters for Human Rights. We continued our learning about processed food and how it hurts o Math test tomorrow!

Sometimes the day after a break is calm and slow. Today wasn't so great. Tomorrow will be better.
Today we worked on a review for Thursday's Math test, which will cover order of operations, multiplying by a two digit number, dividing by a two digit divisor, and problems to solve with bar modeling. We will continue our review tomorrow. For our Human Rights lesson, we grappled with some of our vocabulary by sorting our flash cards out and explaining relationships between the words. Then we got a copy of a plain language version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which we compared to the original. Depending on the article, some of us preferred the old document to the one that was rewritten to be simpler. In Health today, we talked about processed food. We worked in jigsaw groups to learn about foods that were whole foods, had some processing and were highly processed. For example, there was in information card for corn, canned corn, and frosted corn cereal. We discovered that the more processed the food is, the less healthy it is for humans, and the more damaging it is to the environment. Tomorrow we'll think of ways we can switch out to eat some less processed food in our diets. No spelling or vocabulary this week. It is just too short! More division with two digit divisors! We worked today to check our work by multiplying the divisor and the quotient (then adding a remainder if there is one) to get the dividend. We made up the rule: multiply Santa by Gramma and get the toys in the house. See if your child can explain that!
We dug further into the UDHR today, with children becoming experts on different articles of the document. We have been looking at difficult language, summarizing the paragraphs, and visualizing what the world would look like if each article were upheld and what it would look like if that promise was not being kept. Students then met with other groups to teach the points which they had studied and to learn about the others from their classmates. They were impressive! Our class has been sharing many stories of relatives who are veterans or serving in the military. We took the time today to learn a bit about the branches of the military and to watch a video about the history and principles of Veterans' Day. Children got paper to make cards to thank veterans for their service as a Veterans' Day project. Tomorrow, Ms. Belle will be out of class. The students pledged to do their best to be respectful and focused for the sub. Our writing prompt this morning was to write about a crazy-looking root vegetable called "celeriac" which looks kind of like a brain! The class was challenged to find out what kind of recipes it can be used in. We had PE this morning.During Math,, Ms Belle had a meeting, so there was a guest teacher. She still taught us though, because she had recorded a screen-casting of the lesson on her iPod, which we watched at the beginning of the lesson. It was more double-digit divisors, so we worked hard at long division again. Yesterday was a good day. We didn't have a blog post because there was a guest teacher at the end of the day while Ms. Belle was at a meeting.
Today we went to Art where we looked at masks on the projector and actual masks as well. We planned our own masks. In Math, we worked on using the traditional way to divide a number by a two digit divisor. Ms. Belle used some of the bells and whistles on the Eno board to cover up numbers and to do the lesson. We performed tableaus during our Human Rights study and guessed each other's words. We also took a quiz about Human Rights and used the words to write what we know. After lunch - what a treat- we got to read our own books! We discussed Nutrition and talked about the game we played yesterday. This morning in Music we got to see a real African drum that was made by a friend of Mr. K's. In Math, we had a multiplication quiz and split up for our Math Olympiad problem-solving groups. We had our spelling and vocabulary test for the week. We are working to get this done quickly and efficiently. During our Human Rights time, we worked on figuring out vocabulary words in the Introduction to the UDHR through context and by looking at roots, prefixes and suffixes. We are working on vocabulary such as inalienable and fundamental. After lunch, our student teacher, Ms. Cavenaugh,, taught a lesson about making inferences while we read. We read an article about a newly-discovered billboard-sized Mayan tablet. The pictures above are from our Kindergarten buddy activity. We decorated the signs we made that say "Welcome, friend!" in many languages. They will be displayed at the Family Reading Partnership bookfest next weekend. We had PE this morining where we used noodles to play a game. No one got hurt when we whacked each other in the legs..
Mathtime was very low key because people were coming and going. We did do a practice sheet for tomorrow's quiz on multiplication, problem-solving and order of operations. We did human rights and learned many vocabulary words such as dignity, amid, poverty, horrific, and entitled. We did not have a Halloween party. However, we had a great discussion about why we didn't have a party. We also ate cupcakes and read "The Boy of a Thousand Faces". We watched videos and had a quiz about the states of matter. Lydia is a great cook and Alicia would be a good lawyer. There is REALLY no homework, but there is a vocabulary/spelling test tomorrow. Some children have more work to do for that.. In Art we are finishing our amazing self-portraits.
We reviewed one digit divisors and problem solving in Math In the Library, we used Google translate and Microsoft Word to print out signs reading Welcome, friend! in about 3o different languages. We will decorate the borders with our K buddies on Friday. The signs will be welcoming people at the Family Reading Partnership festival in November. OUr Human Rights unit, developed by New York State, includes mentions of the Holocaust in the study of the Declaration of Human Rights. Today we saw a Brain Pop animated video about the causes and basic facts of the Holocaust. We had some conversation, and the children were asked NOT to google or youTube search information about Hitler, Nazis or the Holocaust, as the images and information may be disturbing. For Science, we went to Mr. Anderson's room where some Cornell students taught us more about states of matter. We changed milk/sugar/vanilla liquid into a frozen solid by adding liquid nitrogen. Yummy science! The due date for our blog final project has been extended to Monday, due to Halloween on Friday Today was our best day ever in PE, according to Mr. K.
In Math we did a pretest to see where we are on division, and worked on bar modeling to solve problems, either on a worksheet or on the computer on the Thinking Blocks website. We also worked on fix-ups in our Math books. We continued the Human Rights lesson which Mrs. O'Connor began yesterday. We are reading the Universal Declaration of Human Rights closely together. Tonight's homework includes teaching someone about the history of the UDHR and rereading the article that we worked on today. This afternoon our class divided into two sections to explore the states of matter more fully. We learned the terms chemical,, chemical reaction, and catalyst. We made elephant's toothpaste using hydrogen peroxide, dishsoap, water, food coloring and yeast. Yeast was the catalyst. Look on Edmodo for a video of Elephant's toothpaste gone wild! Today we had a South Hill Shines assembly. They showed our walking in the hall video to the whole school! Two students from our class also played the drums during transitions.
In PE we played Battleball and Capture the Football. Mr. K said that we really got to it, which means we got our heart rates up. Today was the first day of our Math Olympiad rotations. The Math wasn't too hard, but it was complicated. We gave each other our spelling and vocabulary tests. We organized our desks and picked out our best work. In K buddies, we made amazing leaf creatures with the leaves we collected last week. On Monday, Mrs. Mackesey will be our guest teacher.. |
